State Brass Foundry and Machine, Inc. all started in 1919 when Robert “Archie” Austin and Joe Riddle felt the need for a bronze and aluminum factory. They ventured out to accomplish this task. The two men handled all the work themselves and all jobs were welcome. In 1938, Mr. Austin’s son-in-law, Don Archer, began moonlighting at the foundry and later bought out Mr. Riddle. In 1972, Mr. Archer’s son Dennis “Kim” Archer joined the company and now his son Don Archer, the fourth generation is in the business with a fifth generation waiting in the wings.
State Brass Foundry and Machine, Inc. was incorporated in 1922, is centrally located in Salt Lake City. In 2016, they opened an additional foundry in Tooele. They manufacture ferrous, non-ferrous centrifugal and static casting for all types of industrial applications. All castings meet or exceed government and industry standards in accordance with their quality assurance program. Modern specialized manufacturing equipment, combined with the technology gained through nearly a century of experience enables State Brass to offer over ninety different alloy selections. Other services offered by State Brass include finish machining, welding and fabrication, chemical and physical testing and non-destructive examination.
The Company grew and in the early 1950’s they opened their own machine shop, which was later relocated next door when they purchased the Master Cleaning and Shirt Laundry building. Growth continued and in 1967 construction began on aState Brass Foundry 2 new 6,000 square foot shop. This was a unique task as the new shop was built over the top of the old building. As a section of new floor was poured and set, a section of the old roof was removed.
In 1974, with rising fuel costs, the old natural gas furnaces were replaced with modern induction furnaces giving State Brass new capabilities. Now they could also melt and pour irons, steel and stainless steels in addition to the bronzes and aluminums. In 1985, a centrifugal casting operations was added and in 1995 a larger centrifugal machine was installed. This continued growth and expansion has made State Brass Foundry the “Little Giant” that it is today.
